Formula and method
Elapsed days = absolute UTC calendar-date difference ÷ 86,400,000 milliseconds. Inclusive count adds one day after ordering the boundaries.
Worked example
From February 28 to March 1, 2024, the elapsed difference is 2 days because leap day falls between them. Inclusive counting reports 3 calendar dates.
Assumptions and result interpretation
- Dates are compared as calendar dates rather than clock timestamps.
- Elapsed mode excludes the start date and counts the distance to the end date.
- Inclusive mode counts both endpoints.
- Reversed inputs are accepted and clearly identified.
Understanding the result
Weeks are derived from total days in groups of seven. Calendar months are intentionally not estimated because their lengths differ.
Common mistakes
- Counting both endpoints without stating it
- Using local timestamps that cross daylight-saving changes
- Forgetting February 29 in a leap year
- Treating four weeks as a calendar month
