History
A short history of Fairmont
Permanent settlement began in 1857, when E. Banks Hall and William H. Budd arrived and the townsite was platted. The first Martin County post office opened in Fairmont in 1858, and Fort Fairmont was built in 1862. The Southern Minnesota Railroad's 1878 arrival connected the growing community to regional trade.
Local histories trace the name to “Fair Mount,” a description associated with the rolling land around the lakes. Over time the two-word form became Fairmont. Later public utilities, rail connections and civic institutions helped establish the city as Martin County's administrative and commercial center.
