Chaska developed beside the Minnesota River on land long connected to Dakota people. The townsite emerged after the 1851 Treaty of Traverse des Sioux, and local clay supported an industry that made Chaska brick a defining part of the city's identity.
The city incorporated as a village in 1871 and as a city in 1891. Later growth included the Jonathan New Town development and Chaska's expansion within the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
