Method and assumptions

For a straight wall with a stud at each end, spaces = ceiling(wall length ÷ selected on-center spacing); basic studs per wall = spaces + 1. Multiply by identical walls, then add your entered extras. The final bay may be shorter than the selected spacing.

Worked example

A 96-inch wall at 16-inch on-center spacing has six spaces and seven basic studs. A 30-inch wall at the same spacing has two spaces and three basic studs.

Common mistake

An exact spacing multiple still needs both end studs. The calculator does not infer corners, intersections, openings, headers, or extra framing.

Planning limits

This is arithmetic only. It does not specify required spacing or establish load-bearing capacity, connection details, opening design, framing layout, or code compliance.

Privacy

Measurements and results stay in this browser tab. The calculator does not send input values, store them, or place them in the URL. No account or upload is required.

Quick question

Does the tool add framing for doors and windows?

No. Enter any project-specific extra studs yourself after checking the actual framing plan.
