Method and assumptions

Total batten width = count × batten width. Open space = wall width − total batten width. With a batten at each edge, divide by count − 1 internal gaps. With equal outer gaps, divide by count + 1 gaps. Target-gap mode selects the whole count (up to 500) whose resulting clear gap is closest to your target.

Worked example

On a 120-inch wall with seven 2-inch battens at both edges, open space is 106 inches across six gaps: 17.667 inches clear per gap.

Common mistake

A clear gap is not center-to-center spacing. Include batten width when comparing centers. Do not use a fractional batten count.

Planning limits

This is decorative finish-layout arithmetic, not a stud layout, baseboard quantity, substrate plan, or installation specification. Account separately for uneven walls, trim returns, outlets, and real field measurements.

Quick question

Can I start and end with open space instead?

Yes. Select equal outer gaps; the calculator divides remaining space among the two edge gaps and all internal gaps.
