How to use this calculator

  1. Identify the actual stone product before estimating weight.
  2. Measure the coverage area or enter its known square measure.
  3. Use the installed average depth.
  4. Ask the supplier for a loose or compacted bulk density matching the ordering basis.

Formula and method

Volume = area × depth. Waste-adjusted volume is converted to cubic yards. Optional weight = adjusted cubic feet × entered lb/ft³ density.

Worked example

A 15 ft by 8 ft area at 2 in deep contains 20 ft³, or about 0.74 yd³ before allowance. A valid density from the supplier is required to convert that volume to tons.

Assumptions and result interpretation

  • No single stone density is presented as universal.
  • The calculator accepts a custom lb/ft³ density when it is known.
  • Optional cost is based only on the unit price you enter.

Common mistakes

  • Using solid-rock particle density for loose landscape stone
  • Ignoring voids between particles
  • Mixing compacted and loose density
  • Applying a price-per-ton without entering density
