Interactive Gravel calculator
Estimated result
Enter measurements and select Calculate.
How to use this calculator
- Choose dimensions or enter a known area.
- Measure the intended compacted depth.
- Add an allowance appropriate to grading and site conditions.
- For tonnage, enter the supplier's bulk density in lb/ft³.
Formula and method
Volume = area × compacted depth. Adjusted volume = base volume × (1 + allowance). Weight is calculated only as adjusted volume × entered bulk density.
Worked example
A 24 ft by 10 ft area at 3 in deep contains 60 ft³, or about 2.22 yd³ before allowance. Tonnage depends on the actual gravel and its bulk density.
Assumptions and result interpretation
- No universal gravel density is silently applied.
- Gradation, moisture, source material, and compaction affect bulk density.
- Optional cost uses only your entered price per cubic yard or per US ton.
Common mistakes
- Using coverage depth before excavation is complete
- Confusing compacted and loose delivery quantities
- Guessing density from an unrelated gravel product
- Using ton pricing without a density
Methodology sources
Conversions use deterministic factors. Variable material properties are either visibly sourced and editable or left for the user to enter from the supplier.
Results are planning estimates. Confirm actual requirements with the appropriate supplier, contractor, engineer, building official, or other qualified professional.
