Formula and method
Total bases = 1B + 2×2B + 3×3B + 4×HR. SLG = total bases ÷ official at-bats.
Worked example
With 30 singles, 10 doubles, 2 triples, and 8 home runs, total bases = 30 + 20 + 6 + 32 = 88. Across 200 at-bats, SLG = 88 ÷ 200 = .440.
What the result means
Slugging measures total bases earned on hits per official at-bat. Despite its name, it is not limited to values below 1.000.
Common input mistakes
- Adding bases gained after the hit to total bases.
- Including walks or hit-by-pitches as total bases.
- Entering more hits than official at-bats.
