Formula and method
Batting average (AVG) = hits ÷ official at-bats.
Worked example
For 50 hits in 200 official at-bats, AVG = 50 ÷ 200 = .250.
What the result means
Batting average counts how often an at-bat ends in a hit. It does not distinguish a single from a home run.
Common input mistakes
- Using plate appearances instead of official at-bats.
- Adding walks, hit-by-pitches, or sacrifice flies to the at-bat denominator.
- Entering more hits than at-bats.
