Formula and method
Multiply decimal terms by the same power of ten when needed, then divide both integer terms by their greatest common divisor.
Worked example
The ratio 1.5:2.25 scales to 150:225. Dividing both terms by 75 simplifies the ratio to 2:3.
Assumptions and result interpretation
- Finite values with up to six decimal places are supported for simplification.
- A ratio cannot have both terms equal to zero.
- Both terms are scaled by the same factor before reduction.
- Signs are normalized so a negative sign appears on the first simplified term.
