Formula and method

Absolute decrease = original − new. Percentage decrease = ((original − new) ÷ original) × 100. An original value of zero has no defined percentage change under this formula.

Worked example

A value falling from 80 to 60 decreases by 20. The percentage decrease is 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%.

  • Finite negative values are supported mathematically, but interpretation depends on context.
