Method and assumptions

Perimeter = 2 × (width + length). Add your extra binding length. Whole strips = ceiling(total binding length ÷ usable fabric width). Fabric cut width = strips × strip width. Raw yardage = cut width ÷ 36. Optional purchase rounding is always upward to the selected increment.

Worked example

A 58 × 66-inch quilt has a 248-inch perimeter. With 20 extra inches, 40-inch usable width, and 2.5-inch strips: 268 inches binding, 7 strips, 17.5 inches fabric, and 0.486 raw yards (0.5 yard rounded upward to 1/8 yard).

Limits of the estimate

Strip joins, angled seams, bias cuts, pattern matching, fabric defects, and project-specific finishing can increase actual fabric needs. Defaults are editable examples, not universal binding rules.
