Formula and worked example
A percentage means parts per hundred. The three modes use percent ÷ 100 × whole, part ÷ whole × 100, or part ÷ (percent ÷ 100).
Twenty percent of 150 is 30. Reversing the relationship, 30 is 20% of 150, and 30 is 20% of the whole number 150.
Calculations keep full internal precision and use controlled display precision with insignificant trailing zeros removed.
Choose the correct percentage question
Use “What is X% of Y?” when the rate and whole are known.
Use “X is what percent of Y?” when comparing a part with its reference whole.
Use “X is Y% of what number?” when the part and rate are known but the whole is missing.

Zero and signed values
Zero percent of a finite number is zero.
The comparison number cannot be zero when it is used as a denominator.
The percentage cannot be zero when solving backward for a whole because that equation does not determine one finite whole.
Signed and decimal values are calculated mathematically; interpretation still depends on the quantities being compared.
What this page does not calculate
