Formula and method
OBP = (H + BB + HBP) ÷ (AB + BB + HBP + SF). SLG = TB ÷ AB. OPS = full-precision OBP + full-precision SLG.
Worked example
With 50 hits, 88 total bases, 200 AB, 20 BB, 5 HBP, and 5 SF: OBP = 75 ÷ 230 ≈ .326; SLG = 88 ÷ 200 = .440; OPS ≈ .766.
What the result means
OPS combines the rate of reaching base with total bases per at-bat. The two component rates use different denominators.
Common input mistakes
- Adding displayed rounded OBP and SLG instead of the full-precision values.
- Treating sacrifice bunts as sacrifice flies.
- Including walks in official at-bats.
Scope and limitations
OPS is not OPS+, WAR, wRC+, or a context-adjusted offensive metric. It omits other aspects of offensive value.
