Method
The calculator first finds the greatest number of complete calendar months that can be added to the earlier date without passing the later date. If the starting day does not exist in the target month, it clamps to that month’s last day. Remaining days are counted from that anchor.
Worked example
January 31 to March 3 is 1 complete month and 3 days: one month clamps January 31 to February 28 in a non-leap year, then three days remain.
Limits and assumptions
Dates use the proleptic Gregorian calendar from 1600 through 9999. Results are absolute months and days, with direction noted when the second date is earlier. For a pure calendar-day count, use Days Between Dates.
