Date & time calculator

Hours Calculator

Find the elapsed time for one clock-to-clock interval. Choose whether the end is on the same day or the next day, then optionally deduct one break without turning the calculation into a weekly time card.

Enter values and select Calculate.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the start and end times using structured time controls.
  2. Choose Same day or End time is next day explicitly.
  3. Enter a break in whole minutes if one should be deducted.
  4. Use Time Card Calculator for multiple workdays and weekly totals.

Formula and method

Gross duration = end clock seconds − start clock seconds, plus 24 hours only when next day is selected. Net duration = gross duration − break.

Worked example

From 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM on the same day is 8 hours 30 minutes. After a 30-minute break, the result is 8 hours, 8 decimal hours, or 480 minutes.

Assumptions and limits

  • This tool calculates one interval only.
  • A reversed same-day interval is an error rather than an assumed overnight shift.
  • 12:00 AM is midnight and 12:00 PM is noon.
  • No wages, overtime eligibility, taxes, or legal break rules are calculated.

Understanding the result

The result follows the stated calendar or civil-clock rules rather than guessing a timezone, work policy, holiday calendar, or legal definition. Read the displayed endpoint and start-day policy before using a count in planning or records.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to mark an overnight interval as next day
  • Treating decimal hours as hours-and-minutes notation
  • Entering a break longer than the gross interval
  • Using one interval as a substitute for a weekly time card

Methodology note

The calculator uses strict ISO-style date components, Gregorian leap-year rules, explicit clock values, and the deterministic policy shown on this page. It does not call a remote calculation, timezone, geolocation, payroll, calendar, or holiday service.

This browser-local utility is a calculation aid, not legal, payroll, scheduling, employment, tax, or official-calendar advice. Confirm the rules that apply to your situation.
