How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the direction of conversion.
  2. For 12-hour time, enter a time such as 7:45 and choose AM or PM.
  3. For military time, enter three or four digits such as 745 or 1945.
  4. Copy the formatted result when you need to place it in a schedule or message.

Formula and method

For p.m. hours from 1 through 11, add 12. For a.m. hour 12, use 00. In the reverse direction, 00 is 12 a.m.; values from 13 through 23 subtract 12 and use p.m.

Worked example

7:45 p.m. becomes 1945. In reverse, 0030 becomes 12:30 a.m., while 1200 becomes 12:00 p.m.

Assumptions and result interpretation

  • The tool converts clock notation only and does not apply a time zone.
  • The word military describes the four-digit 24-hour display used here; organizational formatting conventions can differ.
  • A colon is omitted in the four-digit result and included in the standard-time result.
  • Midnight is displayed as 0000 and noon as 1200.

Understanding the result

The hour conversion does not change minutes. The two special boundaries are 12:xx a.m., which maps to 00xx, and 12:xx p.m., which remains 12xx.

Common mistakes

  • Adding 12 to 12 p.m.
  • Writing 2400 for the start of a day
  • Dropping the leading zero from a formal four-digit value
  • Assuming a time zone from the clock value alone

Methodology note

The calculation follows the deterministic formula shown above. It does not rely on a competitor calculator or a remote calculation service.
