Exact relationship and formula
1 foot = 12 inches exactly, so 1 square foot = 12² = 144 square inches exactly. Square feet = square inches ÷ 144.

Worked example
36 in² = 0.25 ft²; 72 in² = 0.5 ft²; 144 in² = 1 ft²; 2.5 ft² = 360 in².
This is area conversion. The linear factor 12 must be squared; 12 in² does not equal 1 ft².
