Formula and method
Tip amount = bill × tip percentage. Total = bill + tip. Per-person amount = total ÷ number of people.
Worked example
For a $100 bill, a 20% tip is $20 and the total is $120. Split evenly among four people, the amount is $30 per person.
Assumptions and boundaries
- The percentage applies to exactly the bill amount entered.
- The calculator does not decide whether that amount is before or after tax.
- Bill splitting is equal; itemized unequal splitting is not included.
- No tip percentage is presented as socially or morally required.
Understanding the result
The calculator preserves full finite arithmetic through the calculation and formats ordinary money to two decimal places for display. Percentages can retain additional useful decimal precision. It never evaluates expressions or silently adds tax, fees, exchange rates, or recommendations.
