Standard Error Calculator

Calculate sampling variability directly from summary statistics or a raw dataset.

Choose a standard-error mode

Enter values and select Calculate.

Methods

Mean mode uses SE = s/√n. Proportion mode uses SE = √[p̂(1−p̂)/n]. Raw mode calculates the sample standard deviation with n−1, then divides by √n.

Worked example

For s = 12 and n = 36, SE = 2.

Interpretation boundary

Standard deviation describes observation spread; standard error describes sampling variability of an estimator. Smaller SE does not prove an unbiased or representative sample. This page does not construct intervals or run hypothesis tests.
