Formula and method

Base volume = area × depth. Adjusted volume = base volume × (1 + your allowance ÷ 100). Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. Optional pounds = adjusted cubic feet × your entered lb/ft³ density.

Worked example

A 12 ft × 8 ft area at 2 in depth contains 16 ft³ of sand, about 0.593 yd³, before any allowance. Weight is omitted until a supplier bulk density is entered.

Assumptions

Sand type, grading, moisture, and compaction change bulk density. No universal tonnage conversion is assumed. Area is rectangular or supplied directly; irregular sites need separate sections.

Important limitations

This is a quantity-planning aid. Verify installed depth, actual delivery/compaction conditions, and material specifications with your supplier. It does not assess structural suitability or engineering requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a measured area instead of length and width? Yes, select Known area. Does the tool choose sand density? No; the density field is intentionally optional and editable.
