How to use this calculator
- Choose the shape that best matches the water surface.
- For a circle, enter diameter in the first dimension field.
- For an oval, enter the longest and widest dimensions.
- Measure shallow and deep water depths; use the same value twice for a uniform-depth pool.
Formula and method
Average depth = (shallow + deep) ÷ 2. Rectangular area = length × width. Circular area = π × radius². Oval area = π × length × width ÷ 4.
Worked example
A rectangular 30 ft by 15 ft pool averaging 5 ft deep contains 2,250 ft³, or about 16,831 US gallons.
Assumptions and result interpretation
- Average depth is a planning approximation for a sloped floor.
- Steps, benches, curves, freeboard, and irregular transitions are not subtracted.
- This tool estimates water volume only; it does not provide chemical-treatment, health, or safety advice.
Common mistakes
- Using radius where diameter is requested
- Using wall height instead of water depth
- Applying the rectangle formula to an oval
- Using the estimate as an exact metered fill quantity
