Formula and method

Molarity M = moles of solute n ÷ liters of solution V. Rearrangements are n = M × V and V = n ÷ M.

Worked example

Dissolving 0.50 mol of solute to make 2.00 L of solution gives M = 0.50 ÷ 2.00 = 0.25 mol/L.

  • Volume means final solution volume, not solvent volume before mixing.
  • Moles, molarity, and solution volume must be positive.
  • One liter equals 1,000 milliliters.
