How to use this calculator

  1. Measure the finished paved length and width.
  2. Enter compacted thickness, not loose delivery depth.
  3. Confirm or edit the density for the actual mix.
  4. Add a project-specific allowance, then use the adjusted tonnage for supplier discussion.

Formula and method

Area = length × width. Volume = area × compacted thickness. Estimated weight = volume × entered compacted density. Waste is applied after the base quantity.

Worked example

A 40 ft by 12 ft driveway at 3 in thick has a base volume of 120 ft³, or about 4.44 yd³. At the displayed 145.2 lb/ft³ planning density, that is about 8.71 US tons before waste.

Assumptions and result interpretation

  • The default 145.2 lb/ft³ is an FHWA estimating value for hot asphalt mix, not a universal mix specification.
  • FHWA notes that compacted asphalt unit weight varies with aggregate, gradation, and other mix characteristics.
  • Price is optional and is calculated only from a price you enter per US ton.

Common mistakes

  • Entering inches as feet
  • Using loose thickness instead of compacted thickness
  • Treating the default density as a laboratory result
  • Ordering exactly the calculated amount without supplier guidance
