Music Scale Finder

Select the notes you have. The finder lists common scales whose pitch-class sets contain every selection, without assigning a subjective “best” scale.

How it works

For each root (12 pitch classes), add each documented interval in a scale formula modulo 12. A scale matches only if its set contains every selected pitch class. Exact pitch-set matches are listed before scales that contain extra notes. The library covers Major, Natural Minor, Harmonic Minor, Major and Minor Pentatonic, Blues, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, and Locrian.

Example and limits

C, E, and G are contained in C Major. Selecting C, D, E, F, G, A, and B gives an exact C Major pitch set (and equivalent modal pitch sets).

Pitch-class matches do not identify a song’s key, tonic, note order, chord function, or octave. Sharp/flat pairs are displayed together; this tool does not claim complete notation spelling.
