Derived public-source research

Minnesota Giving Report 2026

A documented analysis of how Minnesota-connected creators and public figures support people, nonprofits and communities.

Research cutoff: September 24, 2026. This is a selected public-evidence snapshot, not a measure of all giving in Minnesota.

Executive summary

What appears in the documented evidence set

The report derives 30 deduplicated project or program rows from 18 qualifying public figures and 20 creator projects across 8 creators. The combined identity set contains 18 unique people or creator groups because the creators also appear in the broader public-figure dataset.

What this report measures

Public records, not total Minnesota philanthropy

Every included identity passed a Minnesota-relationship gate and a documented public-support gate. Minnesota connection and project location remain separate: a Minnesota-connected person can support work elsewhere.

Crowdfunding totals are audience donations unless a source establishes personal funding. Foundation money, event proceeds, donated goods, services and personal support are not combined into one dollar total.

Absence does not mean a person gives nothing privately. Activities and evidence can change as projects launch, totals update and follow-up reporting appears.

Key findings

Five descriptive findings

8 of 10

Broader public-figure rows use formal nonprofit or foundation structures

This includes foundation programs, hospital support and organized charity events. The unit is one retained program row, not a person-level generosity score.

12 of 20

Creator projects include audience crowdfunding

These records keep audience donations separate from creator-owned funds and do not treat funded campaigns as delivered outcomes.

13 of 20

Creator projects document delivery or later follow-up

The remaining 7 creator projects are documented as funded without the retained source establishing delivery of the intended benefit.

13 of 30

Project/program rows are explicitly Minnesota-located

Other rows are national, multistate, outside Minnesota or mix Minnesota and broader work. Minnesota identity is not treated as project geography.

11 of 20

Creator-project sources are dated 2024–2026

All 20 creator projects retain a source date. Phase 5A does not consistently store source publication dates, so no combined freshness percentage is claimed.

Patterns

Mechanisms and causes

Both dimensions are multi-label. Counts below are classifications, so they can exceed the 30 project/program rows and should not be converted into a person percentage.

Cohorts

Creators and broader public figures use different record structures

Creator projects

20 project rows across 8 creators. These records are project-specific and retain funding source, outcome state, source date and project location.

Review the creator project records

Other public-figure programs

10 rows across 10 public figures. Several describe ongoing foundations or programs rather than one discrete event, so direct frequency comparisons would be misleading.

Geography and outcomes

Where activity occurred and what the sources establish

Activity geography

30 deduplicated project/program rows; one geography class per row.

Activity documented in Minnesota13
Activity documented outside Minnesota4
Multistate or national activity12
Minnesota and broader activity1

Documented outcome state

30 deduplicated project/program rows; one retained state per row.

Support delivered12
Funded; intended delivery not established by the retained source7
Follow-up documented4
Ongoing program4
Delivered activity and ongoing program3

Evidence

Source classes and freshness boundaries

The evidence set uses independent journalism, official nonprofits and foundations, campaign/platform records, official organizations and public filings. A row may use more than one normalized source class, so source-class counts are classifications rather than project counts.

8Fundraiser or platform record
12Independent journalism
13Nonprofit, foundation or institutional source
1Official organization source
1Public filing or government source

22 of 30 derived rows retain a source date in the canonical data or an explicit dated source. Freshness analysis is limited to those rows; missing dates are not silently replaced with project dates.

Methodology

Reproducible derivation and limitations

  1. Start with canonical owners. The 18-person public-figure dataset and the 20-project creator dataset are the only source layers.
  2. Deduplicate creators. Eight creator summary rows are replaced by their 20 canonical project records, producing 30 project/program rows and 18 unique identities.
  3. Normalize conservatively. Support, cause, geography, outcome and source labels are assigned only where the retained evidence supports them. Multi-label denominators are disclosed.
  4. Keep money separate. The report publishes no aggregate dollar figure and does not equate fundraisers with personal donations.
  5. Preserve uncertainty. Funded is not delivered, Minnesota identity is not Minnesota project location, and missing source dates remain unknown.
