Divide a polynomial by x − c

Enter values and select Divide.

How to enter coefficients

List one coefficient for every power, highest to constant. For x³ − 6x² + 11x − 6, enter 1, -6, 11, -6 and c = 2. For x³ − 4x + 1, include the missing x² coefficient: 1, 0, -4, 1. Fractions such as 1/2 are supported; decimal coefficients are not, so the factor verdict stays exact.

Method and verification

Bring down the leading coefficient. Multiply it by c, add it to the next coefficient, and repeat. The final entry is the remainder; prior entries are the quotient coefficients. The result displays the full coefficient, multiply, and add rows, then checks both P(x) = (x − c)Q(x) + R and R = P(c).

(x³ − 6x² + 11x − 6) ÷ (x − 2) = x² − 4x + 3, remainder 0.

Scope and privacy

This tool only divides by a monic linear divisor x − c. It accepts 2–13 exact coefficients and does not parse arbitrary polynomial text or divide by higher-degree polynomials. For factoring a polynomial directly, use the Factoring Calculator. Entries run locally and are not sent, saved, or placed in the URL.
