Formula and method
Ideal osmolarity = Σ(molarity in mol/L × entered van’t Hoff factor). The factor is never inferred from a chemical name.
Worked example
An ideal classroom solute at 0.10 M with an entered factor of 2 contributes 0.20 Osm/L, or 200 mOsm/L. Adding a 0.05 M solute with factor 1 gives 0.25 Osm/L total.
Assumptions and limitations
This ideal educational model is not measured osmolality, tonicity, serum interpretation, clinical guidance, or a method for preparing solutions. Actual particle factors can differ from ideal counts.
Frequently asked question
Is molarity the same as osmolarity?
No. Molarity counts solute formula units per liter; ideal osmolarity counts the dissolved particles represented by the entered factor.
