Planning arithmetic only. All variable material assumptions remain visible and user-entered; results are not material, construction, or safety instructions.

Formula and method

Known length: exact skeins = required yarn length ÷ length per skein. In swatch mode, estimated project yarn = yarn used for swatch × project area ÷ swatch area. Apply only your entered extra percentage, then round the skein count upward separately. Yards and meters use the exact international-yard relationship in the NIST conversion reference.

Worked example

A pattern requiring 1,250 yd with 220 yd per skein needs about 5.6818 skeins, rounded upward to 6 whole skeins.

Scope and limitations

Swatch-area scaling assumes comparable stitch, tension, gauge, yarn, and construction. It does not model shaping, sleeves, seams, stitch changes, or a pattern’s actual requirements. Follow the pattern when it gives a yarn estimate.
