Fluid mechanics arithmetic

Reynolds Number Calculator

Enter a characteristic velocity and length plus either density and dynamic viscosity, or kinematic viscosity. No fluid properties are assumed.

Calculation result

Enter values and select Calculate.

Educational planning arithmetic only. Enter your own measured values and properties; these results are not an engineering specification, safety decision, or equipment recommendation.

Formula and method

Re = ρvD/μ when density ρ and dynamic viscosity μ are entered, or Re = vD/ν when kinematic viscosity ν is entered. D represents your selected characteristic length. All inputs are normalized to SI units first. See the NASA Reynolds number explanation.

Worked example

With density 1000 kg/m³, velocity 1 m/s, characteristic length 0.05 m, and dynamic viscosity 0.001 Pa·s, Re = 50,000.

Scope and limitations

This page reports the dimensionless number only. It does not assign a universal laminar/turbulent label: regime interpretation depends on the actual flow geometry and conditions. Material properties can vary with temperature and composition; enter values relevant to your case.
