Formula and method

Liner length = pond length + 2 × maximum depth + 2 × entered overlap per side. Liner width uses the same formula with pond width. Liner area = liner length × liner width. Dimensions are converted with NIST length factors.

Worked example

For a pond 10 ft long, 8 ft wide, and 2 ft deep, with 1 ft overlap on each edge, the rectangular liner estimate is 16 ft × 14 ft, or 224 ft².

Scope and limitations

This models a rectangular bounding footprint and the maximum depth on each side. Irregular shapes, shelves, slopes, folds, and real excavation geometry can require more material. No liner material, thickness, underlayment, anchoring, drainage, or pond treatment is recommended.
