Method
Gauge equals counted stitches or rows divided by the measured dimension. Projected counts equal target dimension multiplied by gauge. Exact results and nearest whole counts are shown separately.
Worked example
20 stitches across 4 inches gives 5 stitches/in. At that gauge, 18 inches projects to exactly 90 stitches. Forty rows across 4 inches gives 10 rows/in and 24 inches projects to 240 rows.
Limitations
This arithmetic does not guarantee garment fit, ease, shaping, or pattern size. Gauge can change with yarn, needles, tension, washing, and blocking.
