Method and reference scale
Handling-unit volume in cubic feet = length × width × height in inches ÷ 1,728. Density in pounds per cubic foot (pcf) = weight per handling unit in pounds ÷ that unit’s cubic feet. Multiple identical handling units multiply both volume and weight; they do not change per-unit density.
The displayed class is the 18-band FCDC density guideline in NMFTA’s March 26, 2026 procedures, not the separate 13-band standard density scale. Thresholds are lower-inclusive and upper-exclusive: <1 → 500; 1–<2 → 400; 2–<3 → 300; 3–<4 → 250; 4–<5 → 200; 5–<6 → 175; 6–<7 → 150; 7–<8 → 125; 8–<9 → 110; 9–<10.5 → 100; 10.5–<12 → 92.5; 12–<13.5 → 85; 13.5–<15 → 77.5; 15–<22.5 → 70; 22.5–<30 → 65; 30–<35 → 60; 35–<50 → 55; 50+ → 50.
Worked example
A 48 × 40 × 45 in handling unit occupies 50 ft³. At 450 lb it has a density of 9 pcf, corresponding to class 100 in this guideline table. Two identical units occupy 100 ft³ and weigh 900 lb in total; their density remains 9 pcf.
Classification limit
This is an informational density-based reference, not an official freight classification. Actual class can depend on the NMFC item, handling, stowability, liability, carrier tariff, and other rules. Measure the greatest outside dimensions of the handling unit as tendered, including projections. Verify the current item and class through ClassIT+, the applicable carrier, or a qualified classification professional. No rate, hazardous-material, or carrier-acceptance decision is made here.
