Engine Displacement Calculator

Find the swept volume of a reciprocating engine from cylinder bore, piston stroke, and cylinder count.

Enter your values

Calculated result

Formula and method

Per-cylinder displacement = π × bore² × stroke ÷ 4. Total displacement = per-cylinder displacement × cylinder count. Convert in³ to cm³ with 1 in³ = 16.387064 cm³; divide cm³ by 1,000 for liters.

Worked example

A 4.000-inch bore and 3.480-inch stroke across eight cylinders yields approximately 349.848 in³, 5,732.978 cm³, or 5.733 L.

How to use this calculator

Enter the requested measurements, choose the units, and select Calculate. Change values and calculate again to compare scenarios. Results keep full numeric precision internally and round only for display.

Limits and common questions

This is a geometric swept-volume calculation. It does not measure compression ratio, actual airflow, output power, or wear.

Are these values measured or estimated?

They are calculations from the inputs you provide, not independent measurements of a particular vehicle.

Are my inputs saved?

No. This calculator works in your browser tab without an account, upload, or calculator-input storage.
